Shirodhara

Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic procedure involving pouring of  oil or other medicated liquids over the forehead. This procedure has both psychological and physiological benefits.

Shiras or the head region is considered as the uthhama Anga or the most important organ. It’s is also considered as one among the ‘thrimarmas’ and the seat of the sense organs. Thus its important to protect it from an ailment.Shirodhara is one among the  important treatments in the ailments related to shiras and body. Usually,sirodhara is preceded by an abhyanga or massage . Afterwards the patient,is made to lie  on a paathi in supine position . The liquid destined for the treatment , decided by the expert after analysing the patient condition, is then made warm and then poured over the patient’s forehead slowly. A gentle pressure is maintained in this flow .The masseuse,under the guidance of the physician does the whole procedure without causing a patient distress. Of the many liquids used ,some are oil,milk ,takra or buttermilk. It can be practiced either in the morning or evening hours.

It can be considered as a shodhana or cleansing therapy that immensely affects the nervous system and thereby the whole body functions. It nourishes your scalp and hair,promotes good sleep,relieves stress and anxiety  and improves one’s  mind concentration.

Shirodhara is also found to be effective in cases of hypertension ,insomnia and post traumatic stress disorders.
