Ayurveda, originating in India, is an ancient kind of traditional medicine that has been practiced for more than 3000 years. Biology, as the name implies, is the study of life, grounded in the understanding that every organism is composed of the five fundamental elements, such as the earth. These components collectively constitute the dosha-dhathu-mala, which serve as the fundamental elements of the human body. A sickness can be defined as a fundamental disruption or disturbance in any of the aforementioned factors. Ayurvedic remedies focus on rectifying this imbalance rather than providing symptomatic treatment. This can be accomplished either through the shamana/palliative approach or the shodhana/detoxification treatment. The former mostly consists of internal drugs, while the latter encompasses panchakarma therapy.
Ayurveda is divided into 8 angas, or branches, each primarily focused on treating different disorders. The field of Ayurveda encompasses various specialized branches, such as Kayachikitsa (general medicine), Kaumarabhritya (pediatrics), Grahachikitsa (demonology), Urdwanga chikitsa (ENT), Shalya Tantra (surgery), Agadatantra (toxicology), Jara chikitsa (geriatrics), and Vajikarana (aphrodisiacs). The four fundamental components of these treatments are the Bhishag (physician), dravya (medicine), Upastha (attendant), and the rogi (patient). These four factors are interdependent and equally significant in the context of Ayurveda.
Ayurveda operates on the principle that food possesses medicinal properties. Therefore, any medical intervention is linked to the adoption of a suitable dietary plan and adjustments to one's lifestyle. Due to the time it takes for Ayurvedic treatments to have an effect at the fundamental level, it is crucial to adhere to these alterations both during the treatment and for a length of time afterwards.
